SELECT LANGUAGE:
Every year, Lionbridge celebrates International Women’s Day. This notable day is especially relevant in the translation services and content translation industry, where women are represented in striking numbers. This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #inspireInclusion. The theme focuses on working towards a world that celebrates diversity, while fostering equality and gender parity. The goal is a global attitude freed from gender-based bias, discrimination, and harmful stereotypes. Lionbridge employee Olga Madurska, Global Program Manager, Player Experience, describes a vision of this. She hopes that globally, “we will perceive others simply as fellow human beings and stop labeling people by gender, age, sexuality, nationality, socio-economic background, or any other identification tag.”
Language services organizations, like Lionbridge, are already deeply dedicated to inclusion by the nature of their services. Customers frequently work with a translation or localization company to ensure that different groups can access content equitably. These are some examples:
Translation: Allows people who speak a different language to access and understand material.
Localization: Helps people from diverse regions worldwide to understand and experience material, not just linguistically, but from a culturally sensitive perspective.
Plain Language Writing Services: In Life Sciences translation, we often assist a drug or medical device maker by developing content written in an easily understood form for patients, caregivers, prospective patients, etc.
Lionbridge’s Smart™ Content Solution: Powered by AI, locates and catalogs offensive terms, non-inclusive terminology, and gender bias. Customers can then work with us to remove truly problematic language and replace it with more inclusive text.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Review for Game Narrative Design: Identifies and corrects biased, harmful, or exclusive language to ensure a positive experience for players of all ages, genders, and ethnicities.
As Miki Inagaki, Lionbridge Country Manager in Japan, says, the industry is also inherently inclusive as a workspace. Miki notes that:
“In the translation and localization industry, collaboration is a fundamental aspect, particularly on a global scale. Our business involves working with diverse internal teams and external partners from around the world. Such an extensive level of collaboration is key to the success of global projects and, inherently, the success of women in their professional journey and career advancement. This diversity and cooperation create an environment where many women excel.”
Lionbridge is a leading language services provider, but we’re also a top employer for women worldwide. To support women’s career growth, Lionbridge utilizes these global programs:
ReachHire: We’ve worked with this U.S. nonprofit for almost five years. Together, we’re helping diverse candidates, including women, to reenter and stay in the workforce after significant time away.
iWill: This is Lionbridge’s organization for female employees based in India. We created it to offer women working at Lionbridge more mentoring and support. Additionally, the organization puts on workshops about topics our employees are interested in, such as financial independence, work-life balance, etc.
Women@Lionbridge: Lionbridge implemented this group to empower women to help other women. It engages and retains female talent at the company via monthly meetings and mentorships. The group also provides female employees with continuous learning opportunities.

Lionbridge supports women and gender equity on International Women’s Day. We also emphasize this year-round. Our Chief People Officer, Ann Lazarus-Barnes says:
“At Lionbridge, we ensure that the women who work for us have access to key leadership roles and are similarly engaged as their male counterparts. We track women’s engagement as compared to other groups throughout the year. As a result of our efforts, women report similarly high scores as men around all topics of engagement. This includes their sense of belonging, development, and career opportunities. They believe their opinions really matter here. Women are in the C-Suite and key strategic positions across Lionbridge, all driving our success.”
