How we use generative AI language services for inclusivity

Pride is a critical celebration for the LGBTQIA+ community and their allies, but many people believe it should be more than one day or month a year. Ideally, people are celebrating and appreciating diversity every day. One way companies can do this is by promoting inclusivity. Lionbridge has always advocated for inclusivity, but now we can use generative AI language services to expand these efforts. Here are four key ways we’re using generative AI translation and content services to promote inclusivity and bolster Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in our culture, for our clients, and beyond.

#1 Human-in-the-Loop AI Translation

The first way Lionbridge uses AI to bolster DEI is actually about the human element of human-in-the-loop AI translation and content services. The most essential foundation of trustworthy AI-powered solutions is having creative, thoughtful, and intelligent AI experts and linguists. These professionals are also a source of diversity. Lionbridge has a diverse, global community of linguistic and cultural experts. These people, via their life experiences, bring more sensitivity and appreciation of diversity than AI could by itself. We’re proud to be cutting-edge genAI language providers, but we’re also very proud of the humans we have working with our AI tools.

#2 Recruiting with Diversity in Mind

Lionbridge’s talent acquisition team is using AI as a key part of the recruiting process. Specifically, we’re using AI to help develop job postings with more inclusive language. We’re also using AI to augment hiring manager communications with candidates, ensuring these messages are always welcoming and supportive of a wide range of people. Lastly, AI helps us automate our job posting distribution. This makes posting to a wider array of job boards and websites easier, which lets us reach a more diverse candidate pool.

#3 Helping Customers Moderate Data More Inclusively

Working with our in-market specialists, we supported a leading technology corporation in overhauling their Responsible AI (RAI) guidelines. We assisted this client in incorporating a wider representation of global cultural norms and languages (over 21) into their RAI directives. Additionally, we aided in training their AI systems with data sets that mirrored diverse and underrepresented demographics. With the revised RAI guidelines, our client was able to gather and analyze data more efficiently and considerately across a wide variety of scenarios. These scenarios encompassed a comprehensive range of ethnicities, socioeconomic statuses, historical contexts, and gender-related matters.

#4 Training Customers LLM Sensitivity Parameters

Lionbridge assisted a different tech giant in training its AI models. With our assistance, the customer’s AI models could differentiate between the severity of DEI issues (and non-issues). These DEI issues included:

  • Stereotyping of various groups
  • Discrimination based on health and religion
  • Sexism

Lionbridge also helped train the AI models’ sensitivity parameters for:

  • Validating bot responses
  • Generating prompts and response pairs
  • Creating various linguist personas

A Continuing Commitment to Pride

Lionbridge has been celebrating Pride for years in a variety of ways; using AI to help build a more inclusive world is just one of our latest actions. Previously, Lionbridge has also sponsored Pride celebrations and parades in local cities, held webinars, and brought in a keynote Pride speaker. We also sponsor an internal LGBTQIA+ employee group. Lionbridge has committed to continue supporting the LGBTQIA+ community for decades to come. We’ll be using the latest technology (like generative AI services), and traditional means (like our corporate culture). Keep watching us to see what we do next.
