Highlights of a year marked by significant innovation and advancements in the localization industry

After facing challenges associated with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, much of the world entered a period of improvement last year, and 2023 has been a year of remarkable progress and innovation in the localization industry.

At the forefront of developments is a notable exploration of generative AI (GenAI) technology to reduce translation costs and boost productivity, among other desired benefits. The technology captured global attention following the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot to the public toward the end of 2022. #8 Case Study: Swisscom Partnership

Swisscom, a leading telecommunications company, has counted on Lionbridge to translate its annual report into multiple languages for over 20 years. #7 Resonate With Global Travelers Through Travel Language Services

In 2023, with the worst phase of the pandemic largely behind most of the world, people desired to travel and were willing to pay more for it than in 2019. Survey after survey projected an optimistic outlook for the travel industry, and it became incumbent again for travel and hospitality companies to put effort into resonating with global travelers. Lionbridge experts set out to answer that question with testing that compared the automated translation quality of several LLMs to the output of the five major Neural Machine Translation engines. Lionbridge found that in one evaluation, the GPT-4 model slightly outperformed the Yandex engine for the English-to-Chinese language pair.
