SELECT LANGUAGE:
Multilingual documents add an extra layer of complexity to a merger review. That’s why you need a translation partner experienced in Antitrust matters and Second Requests. At Lionbridge, we work directly with your team and e-discovery vendors — so you can start negotiations to use translation tools that speed up the process.
Our client is a top-tier global law firm. They were representing a Finish manufacturing company involved in an M&A deal.
The company needed ongoing translation of hundreds of thousands of Finnish and German language documents for production to the DOJ for a Second Request.
Lionbridge developed a workflow, in consultation with our client as well as the DOJ antitrust division, where we processed the files initially as machine translation. Upon request from the law firm or DOJ, Lionbridge provided an enhanced translation of key documents that was reviewed by human translators.
The DOJ noted to our client that our quality, including the initial machine translation, was “light years” ahead of what they received from another party. This workflow has significantly sped up the processing time for our client's production and saved hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars.
“Complete and accurate information is critical in any investigation and there are substantial benefits to ensuring up front that e-discovery processes will identify required information. In addition, this change will more closely align the FTC’s model Second Request with that of the Department of Justice.”
- Holly Vedova, Bureau of Competition, Remarks on the Second Request Process
Our client is a multinational automaker that designs and produces 16 brands of automobiles. The company has a presence in 130 countries.
The company needed to re-submit translations of 70k+ Excel and PowerPoint files to the DOJ in connection with a merger. The DOJ rejected the initial Machine Translations provided by our client’s e-discovery vendor because they were generated as TXT files with no formatting.
Lionbridge provided neural machine translation of the Excel and PowerPoint files, in multiple languages, as fully formatted files.
The Machine Translations closely matched the source documents, and were accepted. We also provide human translations of certain documents of interest flagged by the DOJ.
